On Wednesday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued social media sites instructions to delete any information that would identify the victim of the rape and murder tragedy that happened at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The order was made in accordance with a recent ruling in the case of Kinnori Ghosh @ Anr. versus Union of India & Ors. by the Supreme Court, on August 20, 2024.
In compliance with the ruling of the supreme court, the ministry asked that the names, images, and videos of the postgraduate trainee physician who was sexually assaulted and killed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be removed down from social media sites.
The ruling was issued on August 20 by a bench consisting of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. The order was the result of a motion filed by two lawyers against the release of the victim’s name and identify. The petitioners argued that the image of the deceased’s body was improperly circulated on social media and in violation of the Supreme Court’s Nipun Saxena judgment.
