A man was detained for indications of various crimes of child sexual abuse, rape and pornography of minors on 27 December by the Criminal Investigation Department of Aveiro of the Judicial Police, in Portugal. The home search confirmed the existence of conversations, video, image and audio files related to the alleged criminal practice of this person who triggered the searches.”All these files were obtained by the defendant using a fictitious user profile, using a name and an attractive photo of a young man who does not correspond to him.
The initial submissions by the victims were of free will, following the conviction by the defendant in this sense, he later coerced them, under threat of disclosure of the digital content he had in possession, when they began to refuse to make the videos and photographs that he urged them to send him.The investigation will continue to try to identify as many of the countless victims as possible, based on the analysis of the immensity of seized data and the realization of forensic computer skills”, said the Judiciary Police. The action of the Criminal Investigation Department of Aveiro of the Judicial Police led the young man of 24 years, and without defined professional occupation, as described by the authority, to be present to the Judicial Authorities, for the purpose, for interrogation, and consequently heard the facts preventive detention was ordered.
The victims were aged 11 to 15.The man’s operadus mode, for what has been described, and made publicly known, would go through conversations “established with female minors, through Messenger, the electronic communications platform of the social network Facebook, containing hundreds of multimedia files – video, image and audio – in which children appear naked, with full display and manipulation of intimate body areas “.
Since 2020, this senior Portuguese criminal police corps, which supports the judicial authorities, as a means of prevention, has reported about “a hundred situations of detention, occurring within the scope of sexual crime, with children and young people as victims. One fifth of the cases analyzed, examined and inquired that gave rise to detentions where they encountered and found in possession of the same child pornography that included “intimate images, provided by the victims, induced in error or coerced, by sexual abusers”.”There is a perception, shared by international structures such as Interpol and Europol, that the pandemic reality has increased the occurrence of crimes in a digital environment.
It is, therefore, of utmost importance, to underline the preventive importance of promoting behaviors that reduce situations exposure of victims, in a digital environment and on social networks. In order to suppress this type of phenomenon, interinstitutional coordination is essential, as well as the sharing of information and the early signaling of situations, in order to provide a specialized response in matters of criminal investigation, which allows appropriate decisions to be taken by the competent Judicial Authorities in the context of criminal proceedings “, stressed the Judiciary Police, which in this context adapted spaces in Mainland Portugal and the Islands of Madeira and the Azores prepared in a close relationship with the Portuguese Victim Support Association – APAV and community support for children and young people victims of these crimes s against sexual freedom.
