It is the seventh anniversary of 16 December 2012, the brutal gang rape and murder of a student in Delhi that shook the conscience of the nation and led to unprecedented protests against sexual violence across India. Crime against women has been common in India.
Mukesh Singh,Akshyay Thakur, Pavan Gupta and others including a juvenile gang-raped the medical student on a bus and left her for dead after she left a movie theater with a male friend. On December 16, a 23 year old para- medical student with her fiance while returning home after watching a movie was brutally gang raped in a moving bus and thrown out of the bus along with her male companion after brutally bitten by iron rod by five young men. Angry protesters fought pitched battles with the police to vent their anger against the lawlessness and government’s failure to protect it’s own citizen, resulting the death of a police man. She succumbed to her injuries at a Singapore hospital where she fought for her life after flown from a New Delhi hospital.Candle light vigil and clashes with the police and mere banning of a film which explores the mindset of convicts to vent our anger cannot change the overall outlook about women in the Indian society. Girls are somewhat more abused than boys.
According to World Health organization (WHO),150 million girls have been subjected to sexual violence including forced sexual intercourse. Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the former President of India had rightly said that everyone in society should learn to respect women. Failure to do so is resulting in incidents like New Delhi gang rape. Apart from creating strong criminal laws, fast track courts, strong and active police force, increasing awareness is necessary to curb violence against women. Society should learn to respect women first. In the name of dignity of women, incidents of moral policing have been on the rise.
All the four men convicted in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case are on the death row.The Supreme Court upheld the death penalty that first awarded by the trial court and later confirmed by the Delhi High Court. All the four accused are currently lodged in Tihar Jail (Prison). The Supreme Court will hear the review petition filed by Akhsay Singh one of the four convicts in 17 December.
