Syrian journalist exiled in Turkey is at risk of being deported for trying to cover Turkish military operations in northern Syria. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) denounces this measure, a real obstacle to the right to inform, and asks that he be allowed to work freely.
He has only a few days to leave Turkish territory . Syrian journalist Zidane Zenglow , a correspondent for the pan –Arab channel Al-Arabiya (funded by the Saudi government), had obtained permission from the authorities to go to the Turkish-Syrian border.
“This decision is purely arbitrary and constitutes an obstacle to freedom of information ,” said Sabrina Bennoui, the Middle East bureau chief for Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Neither a blanket prohibition nor outright expulsion can be justified to prevent a journalist from doing his job, regardless of the nature of the relationship between the Turkish authorities and the government funding the media for which the journalist works. “
Contacted by RSF, Zidane Zenglow said he was in Akçakale (Turkish side), when he was called by phone by the authorities to visit a temporary center set up for journalists. He was then withdrawn, ” by decision of Ankara. “
Back in Istanbul, where he resides, the Turkish intelligence services asked him to return to the border. He was interrogated about his work for Al-Arabiya , a chain whose coverage may be considered hostile by the Turkish authorities. The officers then handcuffed and detained him, and then issued him with a deportation notice, which was obtained by RSF on the grounds that it represented a ” threat to internal security and public order. “
Turkey ranks 157th in RSF’s World Press Freedom Index .
