United Nations Victims’ Rights Advocate, Jane Connors visited three local hospitals IN Goma as part as her activities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
On Tuesday (26 Nov) she visited Heal Africa Hospital, which partners partner with UNICEF taking care of victims of sexual violence. Heal Africa is especially taking care of minor victims. Also, Heal Africa takes care of orphan kids and other vulnerable children. These children have a school inside the hospital.
Connors also visited GESOM hospital, a non-profit health association that aims to provide quality care at affordable costs to vulnerable people. GESOM is in partnership with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Joint United Nations Office for Human Rights.
This hospital takes care of alleged victims of sexual exploitation and, according to the head of GESOM, between January 2016 and October 2019, the medical center took care of 13 cases of alleged victims of exploitation and abuse of which the perpetrators are staff of the United Nations system.
Finally, she visited Kyeshero Hospital, which takes care of mostly adult victims of sexual exploitation. It’s in partnership with UNFPA.
As Victims’ Rights Advocate, Connors supports an integrated, strategic response to victim assistance in coordination with United Nations system actors with responsibility for assisting victims. She works with government institutions, civil society, and national and legal and human rights organizations to build networks of support and to help ensure that the full effect of local laws, including remedies for victims, are brought to bear~MONUSCO
