UN-habitat and Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) on 11 February officially unveiled a new public art sculpture in Abu Dhabi as a legacy project from The World Urban Forum.
Salem Al Junaibi from the Department of Municipalities and Transport said, “today, under the “For Abu Dhabi Initiative” and other municipality efforts, we are building hundreds of cycling lanes here within the city.”
He continued, “we have approximately 400km of cycle lanes that we have set to put here in Abu Dhabi island, and these will be spread out all across the city, some in the congested areas, nearby the highways, with a means of getting people from point A to point B, wherever that may be.”
The sculpture is Ai Weiwei’s installation, Forever Bicycles. In Forever Bicycles, Weiwei 720 stainless steel bicycles make up the foundations of the art piece, giving an optical illusion of moving bicycles~UN-HABITAT
