Outraged by the killing of a 4-year-old boy, crowds of angry Pakistani villagers set a local police station in Lakki Marwat district on fire on August 18. Scores of locals protested the alleged police failure to protect residents and solve the crime. The unrest followed the discovery earlier in the day of the body of the child, Owais, who was thought to have been kidnapped about a month ago while playing outside his home. The district police chief called for calm and rejected accusations of police incompetence. The cause of death in the case was not immediately clear.
An opposition movement held a weekly protest in front of Serbia’s presidential office in the capital on August 17 calling for President Aleksandar Vucic’s resignation. In reaction to criticism over the rough handling of demonstrators the previous Saturday, Vucic kept his promise to remove physical barriers and replace male security guards with female. The anti-government rallies began in December after leftist opposition leader Borko Stefanovic was beaten up by masked attackers in central Serbia before a televised political debate~RFE/RL
